The Community Says:
Randy is an extraordinary cyclist who does extraordinary things for the cycling community - locally, regionally, nationally, & internationally. He is a long-time cyclist, bike-commuting to work for years before making a lifestyle decision to retire early and dedicate himself full-time to promoting cycling. He still bikes most everywhere. He chairs the Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee, contributing to the county's Silver Status as a Bicycle-Friendly Community. He is active in neighborhood advisory work. For years, he managed the Washington Area Bicyclist Association website (and volunteered for WABA in countless other ways). He founded and manages the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, dedicated to improving the quality of helmets, disseminating information to the public, & making cycling safer for all. Finally, he is an active volunteer and supporter to Bikes for the World, which channels thousands of donated bicycles overseas, helping to build the cycling community internationally.
Randy has certainly promoted SAFE cycling locally and nationally, through the BHSI, his work on helmet safety laws (contributing to getting the helmet requirement for children), etc
Randy is inspired by: "the great people I have worked with over the years have inspired me:
ú Charlie Martin, the pioneer Arlington bicycle lobbyist who taught us all in the 1980's to work with County officials instead of just ranting.
ú Peter Harnik, organizer of the most successful Bike Day that DC/Arlington ever had, whose model for working with public officials went beyond Martinizing.
ú Hank Hume, former head of Public Works, who showed that it was possible for the older generation of public officials to understand bicycles as transportation.
ú Keith Oberg, who shows every day what the force of one good person who truly believes can accomplish in inspiring the bicycle community to support a worthwhile effort.
ú The County's bike planners and others: Ritch Viola, Charlie Denney, David Goodman, David Patton, John Durham, Collin Dixon, Paul DeMaio and Kevin Stalica, who show us how much can be accomplished to promote bicycling here despite the constraints of working within the County structure."
"I want Arlington cyclists to participate actively in shaping the County's actions to facilitate bicycling here and build a sustainable transportation culture for our community. And of course I want the whole world to wear a helmet when biking."
Judge's comment: "Randy really changed the trajectory of his life to dedicate it to making biking a truly accessible and safer means of transportation, recreation and fitness. Randy thinks and acts locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Randy's extraordinary because he challenges one to think holistically and globally about biking."
Judge's comment: "He has been an active member of the cycling community being involved with various organization and promotes cycling both locally and abroad, his contributions impact cyclists around the world."
Judge's comment: "Not only has Randy been a stalwart in Arlington bike advocacy for longer than a lot of the kids in the program have been alive, but he also independently does helmet testing so that ALL cyclists can be safer."
Judge's comment: "[He] promotes cycling throughout his community by personal example, community leadership, and tireless volunteer effort."
