How to Find the Right Bike for You
Where you’re riding
If you’re mostly riding on pavement, you’ll want a road or hybrid bike. Hybrid bikes with certain tires are also good for gravel or packed dirt without a lot of bumps. Mountain bikes are meant for rough, off-road terrain.
Why you’re riding
If you’re racing or looking for speed, you’ll want the narrowest, smoothest tires typically on a road bike. If you’re commuting or riding recreationally, you’ll probably want a hybrid.
Frame material
Steel is the heaviest, but allows for the most comfortable ride. Aluminium is lighter than steel, but not as forgiving with bumps as steel. Carbon fiber is the lightest and allows for a comfortable ride, but it’s expensive.
Brand
We don’t recommend or sell department store bikes–such as Huffy, Roadmaster, or Pacific. Although they’re initially less expensive, the components (all the parts and pieces) are cheap, often plastic, and break easily. So they’re less reliable and more costly to own in the long run.
Buying a used, good quality brand keeps the price more affordable. Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale are pretty common, but there are lots of excellent brands you may have not have heard of before. We only sell bikes that we know are good quality. This typically means that the components are replaceable, easy to find, and medium to high quality. We want a bike to have a long and happy second life with you!
Bike size
Bike sizes can vary based on the brand, style, and age. In each online listing of our available bikes, we list the height range of the rider that will most likely be comfortable on the bike, but the best way to tell is to come to our shop and take a test ride.
Bike’s age
This matters less than how it has been cared for, and the quality of its frame and components. We sell some beautifully refurbished vintage bikes as well as more modern ones.
Buying a Bike
We do bike repairs and maintenance, too. Find out more.
Have a look online to see what bikes we’ve got in stock. We update the online shop as bikes are sold and new ones are added.
